What is Cannabis culture in DC like?
The cannabis culture in DC is something that has existed for a very long time and a lot of political leaders have come and gone and still people are talking about the legalization of marijuana and cannabis culture in DC. As it stands right now in the District of Columbia, you can only legally consume marijuana recreationally but not purchase it from a store. If you have a medical marijuana card, then you can buy from a medical marijuana dispensary. This situation makes it a bit unusual on how the cannabis industry should operate here in the District and am sure in other states as well.
The recreational use of marijuana was made possible thanks to the Initiative I-71 of the DC Marijuna Laws which clearly states the minimum legal amount of marijuana possession for personal use. It is well known that the laws were passed in November 2014, but it was implemented in February 2015. This means that it’s been more than 5 years since voters in Washington, D.C. approved Initiative 71, which allows anyone over the age of 21 to possess up to two ounces of marijuana and cultivate marijuana on their own land, as well as exchange cannabis as long as no money, commodities, or services are transferred.
It is because of Initiative I-71 Laws that the District of Columbia now boasts a thriving market of cannabis entrepreneurs who are making significant contributions towards our economy. These entrepreneurs have created jobs for the unemployed, made cannabis more accessible to patients who are generally stressed and have anxiety and end up spending thousands of dollars visiting a doctor and have saved the government a lot of resources that were put to fight harmless residents who were enjoying their smoke peacefully. This has allowed the government to put that resource somewhere else in order to catch the real criminals who are doing far much worse than possessing marijuana. However, while we agree that it should be fully legalized, there are others who are opposed to this such as local businesses and government personnel who are a little misguided with the facts about cannabis and its benefits. It’s because of this, the cannabis culture in DC is still on the edge and is yet to fully enjoy the benefits of fully legalizing marijuana.
How do Cannabis Gift Shops work in DC?
In my encounter with some of the cannabis entrepreneurs from DC, they have all emphasized on how difficult and challenging it is to open up a medical marijuana dispensary. According to them, they thought it was pretty straightforward to open a dispensary and have it all up and running. Unfortunately, this has not been the case, which has led them to stick to recreational marijuana and give them out as free gifts and customers give donations for a charitable cause such as advocating for the legalization of marijuana and the release for those who have been incarcerated because of minor marijuana possession. This means that there are no cannabis shops in the DC area selling weed. Gifting and donations are held at certain locations and now with delivery services, gifting takes place even right in front of your doorstep. While giving free weed to someone is lawful, selling other goods and services in exchange for the free gift might get you in trouble with the law.
We believe that marijuana should be legalized because it’s just weed, hence the name of our business, meaning it is just a harmless organic plant that has more use for both personal and industrial use than it is when it's criminalized like the way it is right now and leaving its full potential to be undiscovered. Secondly it has a high medicinal value, meaning it can be used by medical practitioners to give treatment to some of their patients and save their lives and or at least alleviate their pain and sufferings which will increase their life expectancy, hence the county being able to sustain its population. Thirdly, we can raise enough revenue from marijuana sales to have enough to increase the budget in our education system, including making college free and accessible to everyone who wants to go to school and learn up to university level. The money can also be used to pay off some of the debt that the government has borrowed over time and is struggling to pay back, which will allow the government to operate freely without any financial constraints. Moreover, legalizing marijuna will employ tens of thousands of young people who are already familiar with the organic plant and enjoy talking about it all the time. From the farmers in the field, to the manufacturers, to wholesalers and retailers, each and every stage of the process will see that people are employed and have a meaningful career that they enjoy working in that pays them more than the minimum wage positions that are currently available. The reasons why we should legalize marijuana are probably endless and could spend the whole day talking about them, but our main point is that there are more benefits to legalization of marijuana than there are to criminalization of it.
